A story about Kar-wai Wong

I consider myself as having met Wong, Kar-wai since I was 15 feet from him at “An Evening with Wong Kar-Wai” last night and asked him a question on his film 2046 which he answered – LOL! (More details about it in the comments from my original post.)

A story about Amerie

Love her voice- It can be so crisp and clear and blaring at the right times. Like her personality and her music!

The real reason I want to meet Hayden Christensen

Unfortunately Hayden Christensen is grossly, and mistakenly underrated as an actor. It’s true he had a few fuzzy moments in Revenge of the Sith – but this guy has all the right emotions when he’s at even his semi best- if people LOOK carefully; unfortunately, so many people are used to the swearing, loud, even macho, sexually-charged type of lead character. – And Hayden comes across as more of a laid-back kind of guy. I think that is what people mistake for lack of acting skills. If you see him in Attack of the Clones, you’ll see that he is having all the correct emotions his character is supposed to have – even if he doesn’t have a machine gun in his left hand and grenades in his right blowing up flying helicopters with the flick of a wrist… I personally find that people have critiqued film out of Asia as being filled with people who can’t act. I find that the films people are talking about – the acting is great. I love the subtlety behing the layers on the face and the feelings in the eyes that takes place in a many films I have seen out of Asia – and it’s terrific, authentic acting. I think that is also why I can pick up Hayden’s acting as well. (Don’t care what anyone says. ;))
I’ve held back on this post for a long time now because Hayden is such an undeniable “heartthrob” and I don’t want to be part of the fan club (no offense). -But I like Hayden, I hope he gets better roles with the right script & production. I think with the right quality story, direction his acting skills are going to be harnessed and noticed. The Jumper film was ok overall, but again the writing suffered – terribly sometimes – It’s such a shame because the concept of the film was hot but the script again stifled the prospect of a great film and of Hayden’s skills a bit (as well as Samuel Jackson’s).

A story about Alain Delon

Walked past him last year and didn’t bother to turn around to try to just give a hi! Why was I not living in the moment? – to meet this cinema icon who captured wonderfully on film.

Alain Delon, and Claudia Cardinale: my favorite most gorgeous couple on screen!

A story about Taraji P. Henson

Since I first saw this woman in John Singleton’s Baby Boy, I knew- just knew, that this force of nature was meant to be, and deservant of being: a top, well-known actress.

When she played the very introverted role in the successful “Hustle and Flow”, I slapped my fist into my hand and said now her career should really take off -this woman’s abitilies have to respected. I don’t want to see her get stuck in the typical “ghetto-esque” mama bopping around – through she can play that role well hitting that slang off the side of her mouth with swagger! (and I mean that as a complement ).

I’m happy she’s currently playing an attorney on Boston Legal however I personally feel her talent is restrained there (I don’t like the way the have her hair – sorry;-() and she’s worthy of more.

I think there was a wink to her talent when she played the gun-toting lovergirl assassin in Smoking Aces. She’s also acting in an upcoming film in which Brad Pitt is headlining and some other A-listers/well knowns.
The World will see the day when this force of nature will unleash her skill. For closest comparision, she’s like a talented Zhang Ziyi that hasn’t been able to pop-forth completely yet.

Some of you might scratch your head, but I have to brag in this case, I’m good at recognizing great talent and Taraji is that “Crouching Tiger” waiting to spring forth onto that ultimate screen. Don’t sleep! Sometime within 10 years she should be (merit-wise) leading and headlining great roles if she’s properly acknowledged and continues to develop herself and of course plays her cards right – which I don’t doubt. – and don’t let the “gangster” in her roles fool you!
I also appreciate how she takes risks with her characters. She’s a bad-ass like Bette Davis – She’s not afraid to make faces or even look less than glamourous. This woman’s complete talent, the world has yet to see. Hollywood really needs to wake the hell up – or put on some glasses!

A story about Tatsuya Nakadai

I believe he is one of the few actors left from a great generation of Japanese Cinema (Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu and a ton of other notable directors). The Criterion Collection has great feature interviews with Tatsuya Nakadai on Kurosawa’s films.

I admire the work he has done. Mr. Nakadai can be intense, dramatic, comical and stone cold. I look forward to meeting him. He’s one of those people I would like to sit down and have afternoon tea with for a nice long cordial chat.

Why I admire Bruce Lee

Amazing drive, focus and you have to respect what he was up against in breaking through the prejudices he had to endure here in America, particularly in the TV/film industry.
He was an outstanding talent. I could only imagine what Martial arts films would be like having to make room for his abilities if he were still alive today. It would also be interesting to know how much martial arts films would be with the Bruce Lee touch given the technology and wires etc…. whew!

Nobody kicked like him. I love the way Bruce Lee kicks! I think he was at the top of his game when he made the final scenes of Game of Death and of course I also enjoyed his other films but Enter the Dragon is the one that’s the most timeless and still hot to death!

A story about Crystal Kay

I was in Japan 7 years ago (scary!) when I saw this young pre-teenie girl on TV singing in Japanese and dancing with her little crew kind of J-Pop I think it’s called. She was an artist in the spirit of young Britney Spears.

I was in awe as I just wanted to know who this young girl was. How interesting it was to see a young lady of Japanese/Korean and African-American descent having grown up in Japan.

Years later I happened to mention her description at a Karaoke bar and I found out her name, looked her up on the net and this young girl who I remembered singing cutesy popcorn bubble gum songs was now a woman! Then I remembered it had been six years since I formerly seen her on TV LOL!

Anyway she’s fluent in Japanese and English. She sings a lot of R&B style songs.
Hopefully she’ll penetrate the US market sometime, because she’s a promising talent already doing well in Japan. Her latest album “All Yours” was number 1 in J-land.

I’d love to meet Crystal and interview her for a short doc.

Check out one of her songs:

Why I admire Leslie Cheung

Leslie Cheung was just the best actor in the World hands down. He has a tremendous depth, sensitivity and versatility.

Internationally he may be best known for his role in Farewell My Concubine, A Better Tomorrow, Days of Being Wild and Happy Together.

Days of being wild is an ripe example of his ability as his character engages in verbal dual with his adopted mother to find out who his real parents are. To see contrast in his roles, see him in the very feminine role in Farewell my concubine and a pretty masculine/tough role in Shanghai Grand.

Sadly he comitted suicide in 2003.
Leslie you are missed!

See this cool tribute to Leslie on You tube.

Why I admire Gael Garcia Bernal

He’s just a tremendous actor. Watching Gael act is exciting the way Allen Iverson plays b-ball. The first time I ever saw him was in Amores Perros and he was just great.
He seems to be highly intelligent in his interviews and thoughtful in picking his roles. (although I confess, I did not like The Crime of Padre Amaro).

He seems to have a great relationship with Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Amors Perros.)

It seems to me- and I could be speculation wrong but though his role in Babel was kind of small, it was my hunch that he really has a rapport with the director, as he came across in that particular film as strongly confortable in his role. There was just an extra confidence presenting itself there – that’s just my impression.

Kudos to “3 Amigos” González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labrinth)secured a 100 million dollar deal for 5 films among the directors/friends.

Congratulations to them along with along with Gael and his Y tu Mama Tambien co-star, Diego Luna who formed their own production company. Their first film was shown in Cannes during the festival. Mexico is representing in film and I can’t wait to see more good stuff from them.
